Is Jose Mourinho considering a move to Paris St-Germain?
By Joe Harker
Jose Mourinho is in his second season at Manchester United, a time when he traditionally wins the league title and rises to his highest point in a job. Things tend to fall down in the next season, or he gets another job.
However, United look second best in the Premier League to their local rivals Manchester City, and Mourinho is making some odd comments about the fans.
There are even suggestions that he could end up at PSG next season, with The Sun reporting that contact has been made between the club and Mourinho's representatives. The manager has made a clear commitment to United, but has not been able to resist saying what a great club PSG are in behaviour that has led some to believe he is flirting with the Parisian side. He has also said that he will not end his career at United, though clarified that he meant that no manager can realistically expect to have such longevity in a job as enjoyed by Sir Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger. If the days of a manager staying in one job for over 20 years are truly gone then it is not ridiculous for Mourinho to suggest that he will have other jobs after the United post.
The contact could be a way for Mourinho to have more financial control at United. The Daily Mirror suggests that he wants more backing from the United board and is using the prospect of joining PSG as an incentive. His contract at United runs until 2019 with the option to sign for another year, but he may not stay that long.
Bleacher Report suggests that Mourinho is unhappy that his team is struggling to match Man City in terms of creativity, but believe that the manager should be getting more from a crop of talented players. The team appears to be struggling with central midfielder Paul Pogba out injured, but they have impressive attacking options in the side and the manager should perhaps be getting more from his squad.
The Daily Express reports that PSG want to appoint Mourinho as a way of keeping record signing Neymar at the club, with the Brazilian forward apparently unhappy under current boss Unai Emery and considering whether his €222 million move away from Barcelona could be a stepping stone to return to Spain with Real Madrid. PSG certainly don't want their star signing to leave any time soon and they see appointing Mourinho as a way of convincing him to stay.
