Americans not all on board with Iran deal pullout

President Trump’s announcement of U. S. withdrawal from the multi-nation Iran agreement is an action that divides the country politically and ideologically, and a decision on which more than a third of the country takes no position. But more say the U.S. should not withdraw than think it should.

Nearly one in four Republicans say the U.S. should remain in the agreement. But twice as many disagree and support the President’s decision in the Economist/YouGov Poll conducted in the last few days before the announcement. Republicans say they have heard more about the agreement than have Democrats and Independents.

Men and women also disagree with each other (although more women say they aren’t sure). There are gender differences on the question of withdrawal even within the parties.

The poll suggests a certain amount of hope for the future with Iran: 35% believe the United States can negotiate a better agreement with the country many regard as an enemy of the U.S., but more than a quarter disagree.
