The Russian government has dismissed allegations that the country's intelligence officials were in repeated contact with Donald Trump's team ahead of the US election.

It's time America knew the truth

What is Donald Trump's connection to Russia? As the plot gets ever deeper, the New Yorker, demands an investigation into the president's links to put America's mind at ease.

American intelligence services believe that Russian intelligence agencies, at Putin’s direction, tried to help get Trump elected..

It is also well-established that Trump has had numerous financial dealings with rich and well-connected Russians.

Throughout Donald Trump’s presidential campaign he expressed admiration for Russian leader Vladimir Putin, which led to a mural of them kissing being painted on the side of a restaurant in Lithuania.

After his Electoral College victory, Trump continued praising the former head of the KGB while dismissing the findings of all 17 American national security agencies that Putin directed Russian government interference to help Trump in the 2016 American presidential election.

"The only way to clear things up is to hold a proper independent investigation, with a broad remit to look at Russian interference in the election, Trump’s ties to Russia, and the Administration’s emerging Russia policy," writes The New Yorker.

"To this end, the best option would be to set up a bipartisan select committee in the Senate, made up of representatives from various other committees. Back in December, after a round of revelations about the Russian hacking, Senator John McCain and a few other Republicans said they would support this idea. But Mitch McConnell, the Senator Majority Leader, squashed it."

The latest mystery surrounds the resignation on Monday of US national security adviser, Michael Flynn, amid a flow of intelligence leaks that he had secretly discussed sanctions with the Russian ambassador to Washington and then tried to cover up the conversations.

In the wake of Flynn’s resignation, it's time Americans knew the truth.

Donald Trump knew Michael Flynn misled officials on Russia calls for 'weeks'

Members of Donald Trump's presidential campaign had repeated contacts with senior Russian intelligence officials in the year before the election, it has been reported, as pressure grows on the president to explain his relationship with Moscow.

American law enforcement and intelligence agencies discovered the alleged communications in phone records and intercepted calls around the same time they uncovered evidence that Russia was trying to interfere with the US election by hacking into the Democratic National Committee, current and former American officials told The New York Times.

The officials said there was no evidence the Trump campaign was colluding with the Russians on the hacking or other efforts to disrupt the election, the newspaper reported.
