Should the Obamas get an invite to Prince Harry's wedding?

By Joe Harker

There's going to be a royal wedding. Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are getting married in May 2018 and it might be one of the social events of the year. As Harry is not likely to become King the wedding will not be a full state occasion and the happy couple will get some influence over the guests. Harry might decide to invite a friend of his who happens to be a former President of the United States.

Prince Harry and Barack Obama appear to have struck up a friendship. The pair recorded an interview at the Invictus Games talking about helping young leaders and appear to be good friends. CNN reports that their friendship has lasted for several years, meaning that the Obamas might find themselves receiving an invite to Prince Harry's wedding.

However, there could be a problem. An orange, outspoken and peculiarly-coiffed problem to be precise. Donald Trump is the current President of the United states and he might indirectly prevent Barack and Michelle Obama from being invited to next year's royal wedding.

The Sun reports that the UK government pleaded with Prince Harry not to send the invitation for fear of upsetting Trump. They quote a government source who explained the situation. They said: "Harry has made it clear he wants the Obamas at the wedding, so it's causing a lot of nervousness.

"Trump could react very badly if the Obamas get to a royal wedding before he has had a chance to meet the Queen. Conversations are ongoing and ministers will eventually have to decide. If the PM lays down the law, Harry will just have to suck it up."

While the bride and groom would reportedly like the former President and First Lady to attend the ceremony, they would also seemingly not want to extend that invitation to President Trump which could cause him to throw a tantrum. Trump has regularly criticised Obama and could see it as a major snub if his predecessor is invited and he is not. Relations between Britain and the US are somewhat strained due to Trump's twitter behaviour and an invitation to the Obamas could see those relations become even worse.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are reportedly not big fans of Donald Trump and they are under no obligation to invite heads of state to their wedding. It would not be a snub if Trump was not invited, but he could see it as one if Obama was asked to attend.
