The X Factor welcomes its most credible and important contestant yet tonight, as transgender male Felix Shephard takes to the stage, and if you're not moved to tears you are officially stone.

Felix was born Emily, but realised as a teen he needed be 'who I am and I need to tell people'.

And when the trans community, particularly trans men, are near invisible when it comes to prime time television, Felix's arrival couldn't be more urgent.

'I'm from Birmingham, I'm currently studying a degree in song-writing and loving every second of it,' he begins to judges Simon Cowell, Ayda Field, Robbie Williams and Louis Tomlinson ahead of his audition tonight.
